When the Labradoodle was created, it was bred to be a service dog. A lady living in Hawaii, who was sight impaired, wanted a guide dog. This would give her some independence. The problem was…her husband had dog allergies. After some inquiries, a dog was created in Australia to help her out. It was a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. Why these two breeds? Both are known for their intelligence and their genuine companionship qualities. The goal was a sound service dog, with an allergy friendly coat. And with that, the Labradoodle beginnings happened!
Today, many people are also looking for a dog that can do service, and be allergy friendly for either themselves, or those around them. The Australian Labradoodle is often called upon to fill that role!
We recently heard from Luna, one of our doodles who is almost 2. Luna was acquired by her mom, Lauren. Lauren is a teacher. She wanted a dog that could go into the classroom to help students. She also wanted a dog that could be trained to be a service dog for her.
This is what Lauren had to say, ” She is simply the best! She has changed my life in ways I never imagined. I am also a teacher and she goes to school with me. The kids ADORE her and she is so good with them. I work with kids with behavior issues and just her being there is amazing. She has such a sweet demeanor and personality. She also has the most beautiful human eyes.”
Currently Luna is in training to be a service dog as well. We are so proud of both Luna and Lauren. It takes a team to accomplish what they have done… and what they will do in the future.
These doods are amazing!
